Learn about the Application Process
International scholars who are interested in spending a research period at the O'Neill School at Indiana University should first identify an O'Neill faculty member that they plan to work with, and who agrees to serve as their faculty host for the duration of their time on-campus.
After securing a faculty host, that faculty member will have to apply to the O'Neill administration in order to host you. Considerations for approval include: faculty member's availability to provide guidance during the research period, quality of scholar's research plans while on-campus, and ways that the scholar will enrich the O'Neill community.
Once the faculty member receives approval from the O'Neill administration - scholars will work with the O'Neill International Office (OIO) and the IU Office of International Services (OIS) to begin the J-1 visa process.
OIO and OIS will guide you through the J-1 visa process. You will need to fill out many forms in a timely manner. Please have the following items ready for your application:
- Passport
- Passports of any dependents (spouse, children, etc) that will join you
- CV
- Proof of financial documentation
- English proficiency documentation
Visiting scholar applications must be initiated at least six months before your planned arrival date. The J-1 visa process is time-consuming and lengthy, so it is required to start early. Please review the IU Office of International Services' webpage and resources on the J-1 visa program and process.
