O’Neill International offers a variety of overseas opportunities with varying costs and fee structures. See below for a breakdown of the main expenses you can expect to incur.
Understand the costs of studying abroad
Your IU Bloomington Bursar account will be charged two amounts for participation in an O’Neill International winter break or spring break program:
- O’Neill International program fee
- IU Bloomington Tuition (1-3 credits)
Please see below for additional details.
Program Fee
The program fee for spring break and winter break programs will cover a variety of your expenses on the ground: housing, medical insurance, course excursions (tickets, entrance fees, etc.), food (number of meals varies by program), transportation (varies by program), etc.
The program fee will be charged to your IUB Bursar account in two installments:
- A $250 non-refundable pre-payment shortly after you confirm your participation in the program
- The remaining program fee will be charged in early December (winter break programs) or February (spring break programs). If you withdraw from the program before the final payment is collected, you will be charged in accordance with the withdraw policy you sign at the time of acceptance to the program.
IU Bloomington Tuition
You will register and pay for the course credits at the IU Bloomington tuition rate (based on your student status).
If you are enrolled as a full-time IUB undergraduate student during the spring semester and enroll in V482/E482 as part of your block credits, there is no additional tuition cost to participate in a winter break or spring break program. Undergraduate students from non-IUB campuses, graduate students and part-time students will pay for 1-3 credit hours of tuition.
Flight / Travel Insurance
All participants on O’Neill International programs are required to purchase their own flight. You will be given clear instructions on arrival and departure times. Many students find that it is helpful to coordinate flights with another participant so they have a travel buddy.
Since you will assume full financial responsibility for the flight — including any travel delays, cancellations, or lost luggage — we strongly encourage you to purchase a travel insurance plan that can reimburse you for a multitude of travel related issues!
Additional Costs
You will need to pay for any food that is not included in the program fee, any transportation that is not included in the program fee, vaccinations, visa fees, your international cell phone plan (optional), free-time activities, and other incidentals.
Your IU Bloomington Bursar account will be charged two amounts for participation in an O’Neill International summer program:

IU Bloomington Tuition
For all O’Neill semester exchanges, you will pay tuition to Indiana University through your normal registration process (no tuition will be paid to the exchange university). Because you will be enrolled in IU credit hours, during the academic year, many students find that they are able to apply many of their typical funding sources to the credits they earn overseas.
On-the-Ground Expenses
Unlike our short-term programs, none of our semester exchange programs charge a program fee.
That means you get more contol over the budget for your on-the-ground expenses such as housing, transportation, food, health insurance, vaccinations, visa fees, your international cell phone plan (optional), cultural activities, and other incidentials.
We can work with you to build a budget for some of these expenses.
