United Arab Emirates

Law, Policy, and Public Administration in the UAE (3cr.)

Spend your spring break studying law, policy and public administration in the UAE. The country is safe, politically stable, and often uses English in the public and private sectors. This provides the ideal location to explore the striking blend of traditional and modern forces that shape policy and life in the UAE.

Spring Break 2023

Please note: This course will meet one day a week during the 1st 8 weeks of the spring semester before travel to the UAE over spring break.

V482 / V582 - Law, Policy, and Public Administration in the UAE (3cr.)

Instructors:Beth Cate & Nicholas Connon

This three-credit course (V482/V582) will meet eight times during the spring semester before travel to the UAE over spring break. Students from IUPUI and the regional campuses may join the pre-departure classes remotely.

O’Neill International in the United Arab Emirates will build your global competencies concerning law-related institutions, systems, principles, and cultures in an area of the world that differs substantially from the United States. Critically, the program seeks to engage students in a probing analysis of the similarities and differences they will encounter and to be able to more thoughtfully examine the forces and values that shape American law and policy.     

  • Go on a desert safari in the Arabian Desert
  • Travel to the top of Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building
  • Tour the spectacular Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, resting place of the UAE’s first president
  • Explore the “Sustainability City,” a 46-hectare “eco-city”
  • Visit the Dubai Mall, the world’s largest mall
  • Tour Abu Dhabi Heritage Village
  • Tour Louvre Abu Dhabi
  • Visit the Mall of the Emirates, which has indoor snow skiing and penguins

You will be housed in hotels in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. You will share a room and breakfast will be provided each morning.

Note: Your IU Bloomington Bursar account will be charged two amounts for participation in this O’Neill International program:

  1. O’Neill International program fee (two payments)
  2. IU Bloomington Tuition

2020 UAE Program Fee: $1,400*

The program fee will be charged to your Bursar account in two installments:

  1. A $250 non-refundable pre-payment shortly after you confirm your participation in the program
  2. The remaining $1,150 will be charged in January

The program fee for this program includes:

  • Lodging
  • Medical insurance
  • All class activities & excurisions
  • Several meals
  • On-the-ground transportation for course activities

IU Bloomington Tuition: 3 credits

If you are enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student on the Bloomington campus during the spring semester and enroll in the course as part of your block credits, there is no additional tuition cost to participate in this program.

Students from other IU campuses, graduate students, and part-time students will pay for 3 credit hours of tuition, based on your student status on the Bloomington campus.


Additional Costs

The program fee does not cover airfare, some meals, non-program related activities, or any personal expenses incurred outside of the instructional program. 


Scholarships

The O'Neill International Equal Opportunity Scholarship is available to help O'Neill students from IUB and IUPUI study abroad. Additional need based aid will be provided for students participating in the UAE program. Please visit our scholarship page for eligibility requirements and application deadlines.

Other scholarships are available on a competitive basis.

The program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students from any IU campus. Undergraduates must have a minimum 3.4 GPA. Graduate students must be in good academic standing. The instructors will review student applications, conduct interviews, and make the final decision on admission to the program.

During the application period (September 1 - October 1) an "Apply Now" button will be available at the top of this page. You will need to submit the online application by 5 pm on October 1.
