V482/V582/E482/E582-3 credits.

Program Director: David Bell

Learn how to integrate environmental sustainability into social enterprises while exploring business models with different approaches to the role of revenue/profit and positive societal outcomes. Gain insights into the complex relationships between these domains and explore innovative solutions for sustainable development. The intersection of business and social impact is a focal point of this course. Recognizing the global nature of environmental challenges, this program embeds students into the South Korea context to serve examining energy, environment, and social innovation. Seoul is a major economic hub not only for South Korea but also for the entire East Asian region. Its economic strength and technological advancements make it a key player in shaping policies and practices related to energy, environment, and innovation. Students will hear from distinguished professors from Seoul National University.

This course will meet on the Bloomington campus during the first half of the spring semester and then will travel to South Korea over spring break. Students from other regional campuses may join the pre-departure classes remotely.

Below is a list of potential excursions:

  • Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI): supports low-carbon green growth strategies in developing countries based on Seoul's experience.
  • Gyeongbokgung Palace: Former presidential palace, built in 1395.
  • Demilitarized Zone: Panmunjom-historically significant as, for example, the location of the 1951-53 truce conference between UN forces, North Korea and Chinese armies.
  • Cheong Wa Dae Korean (the Blue House): Former presidential residence and the diplomatic reception halls of South Korea from 1948 to 2022.
  • National Institute of Green Technology (NIGT), which leads the dissemination of Korea's green technology achievements and promotes joint cooperation with outstanding green technology research institutes abroad.

Student will stay in a hotel or high-quality hostel in central Seoul. Students will share a room with 2-4 other students on the program; each student will have their own bed.
