Students should work with their O’Neill academic advisor to determine which semester will fit best for them to study at UC3M. Below are the general timeframes of UC3M’s academic calendar. Please use these time frames to help in planning your semester abroad:
Fall Semester: Beginning of September - Mid December
Spring Semester: Late January - Late May
Academic calendar
UC3M offers a wide variety of courses in fields relevant to most O’Neill majors and minors, including subjects like Law, Policy, Management, International Affairs, Finance, Arts and Cultural Management, HR, Healthcare, and more. Courses are taught in English and there are also Spanish language course options. While it is possible to participate in this exchange without any prior Spanish language, we do recommend that students enroll in a Spanish language course at UC3M. Participants in this exchange will be in class with other Spanish and international students and will enjoy complete immersion in the Spanish education system and culture.
Courses pre-approved to count in O’Neill majors
The above list is not final. We will work with you on approving other courses from UC3M course offerings to count towards your degree requirements.
UC3M Course Offerings
You must enroll in 25-30 ECTS of coursework during your semester abroad.
If you drop below the required enrollment while abroad, you will be awarded F grades for the missing credits per IU policy. Please maintain required enrollment!
Most of the semester exchange students live off-campus. Visit the UC3M housing website to learn more options. As housing will be your biggest expense while studying abroad, we do advise you to start searching for housing early and budget accordingly.
You will only need to pay for 15 credits at your regular flat tuition based on your residency, which excludes mandatory and program fees, through your bursar account. There are no program fees. No tuition will be paid to UC3M.
In addition to tuition, you will be responsible for covering your own overseas expenses including airfare, food, and housing. Roughly $1,200 dollars a month should cover food, housing, study materials, and incidentals. Your biggest cost variable will be housing.

Merit-based and need-based scholarships are available for students participating in O'Neill exchanges.
O'Neill scholarship application deadlines are the same as the program application deadlines. For spring semester exchanges, the deadline is September 1. For fall semester exchanges, the deadline is February 1.
