Scholarships, Grants and Loans
O'Neill Scholarships for O'Neill Students
Amount of Award: $250
All O'Neill undergraduate students who participate in an O'Neill International spring break program will receive an automatic scholarship of $250. The scholarship will be applied to your IUPUI bursar account shortly after the O'Neill International program fee is charged on your IU Bloomington bursar account.
For the purpose of this scholarship, any student with a declared major, minor or certificate in O'Neill will receive the funding.
Amount of Award: $500
All O'Neill undergraduate students who participate in an O'Neill International summer program will receive an automatic scholarship of $500.The scholarship will be applied to your IUPUI bursar account shortly after the O'Neill International program fee is charged on your IU Bloomington bursar account.
For the purpose of this scholarship, any student with a declared major, minor or certificate in O'Neill will receive the funding.
Amount of Award: Varies based on the number of applicants
At O'Neill International, we do not want cost to ever be a hinderance to gaining a valuable overseas experience.
After you submit your application to O'Neill International you will receive access to a scholarship portal. The Equal Opportunity Scholarship will ask you to write an essay describing any financial situations you wish for us to take into account and will also ask you to create a detailed budget (outlining expected expenses, possible funding sources, etc.). The O'Neill International Office will review all applications for this need-based award and will divvy out available funds to qualified candidates accordingly.
The scholarship will be placed on your IUPUI Bursar account, shortly after tuition and program fees are charged at IU Bloomington.

O'Neill Scholarships for All Students
Amount of Award: $250-$600 (varies based on program length)
Each year, we select one student from each O'Neill International Program (spring break and summer) to receive a marketing scholarship from the O'Neill International Office. This scholarship is in exchange for marketing related tasks that will be completed before, during, and after your program. Examples of possible tasks include: blogging, photography, videography, social media, and supporting on-campus marketing efforts.
The amount of scholarship received depends on the length of the program and the number of tasks completed. Each recipient will work with the SPEA International Office to design a custom scholarship contract that aligns with the recipient’s skill-set.
- Spring Break Scholarship: Up to $250
- Summer Program (2-3 weeks) Scholarship: Up to $400
- Summer Program (6 weeks) Scholarship: Up to $600

Amount of Award: $1000-$2,000
The Scholars in Global Citizenship Undergraduate Travel Award supports high-achieving undergraduate students studying environmental policy and management in a developing part of the world.
The amount of award received depends on a variety of factors (strength of application, cost of program, financial need, and the total number of awards given), but typically ranges from $1000-$2000.
All students who meet the eligibility criteria below are encouraged to apply:
- Must be participating in an approved O'Neill International Program in the spring or summer of 2020: Caribbean, Costa Rica, Senegal & the Gambia, South Africa, or Cayman Islands
- Must have a minimum 3.4 GPA
- Must be an undergraduate student on any IU campus
- Preference given to students who have financial need

Thanks to the generous support of the Randall L. and Deborah F. Tobias Center for Innovation in International Development at Indiana University, every participant on the 2020 Senegal and the Gambia program will receive an automatic scholarship in the amount of $750.
The Tobias Center exists to determine how to best assist countries in need while fostering their self-sufficiency, engaging policymakers, non-governmental organizations, and corporations alike. The center’s scholars spearhead research and identify innovative approaches to international assistance, and specialize in the topic of foreign aid as it affects the environment and public health.
All students who are accepted to the program will receive the $750 scholarship automatically. The scholarship will be placed on your IU Bloomington Bursar bill shortly after the program fee is charged.
The Tobias Center has also provided funds for a merit-based scholarship that requires an application. The application is part of the O'Neill scholarship portal. You will receive access to the portal immediately upon completion of your program application. Preference will be given to students with financial need, but all program applicants are encouraged to apply.
Amount of Award: $750 given automatically to every accepted student.
Several generous donors have started a scholarship fund at O’Neill specifically to support our Law & Policy program in the United Arab Emirates. The donors believe it is vital in today’s globalized world for students to be exposed to the striking and uniquely blended legal system in UAE, as well as a part of the world that is extremely underrepresented in study abroad opportunities.
All students who are accepted to the program will receive the $750 scholarship automatically. The scholarship will be placed on your IU Bloomington Bursar bill shortly after the program fee is charged.
IUPUI Scholarships
Amount of Award: Varies
Many academic departments across campus offer students from their departments scholarships for study abroad that may be used toward any IU approved overseas experiences (including O'Neill International programs)!
If you are a major or minor in a department other than O'Neill, make sure to check with your department to discover additional funding opportunities.
These scholarships will likely be placed on your IUPUI bursar account.
Need help funding your SPEA Abroad experience? As an undergraduate or graduate student, you may be eligible to apply for the International Experience Scholarship.
- Any IUPUI, IUPUC, or IUFW undergraduate or graduate student, full or part-time, who will be participating in an approved, credit bearing study abroad program is eligible. Non-degree seeking students who are completing a certificate may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Students need to have identified a program or experience in which they plan to participate, but do not need to be accepted into the program at the time of applying for this scholarship.
- All applicants must be in good standing and should have a minimum IU cumulative GPA of 2.75.
- The credits earned on the program must count towards the student’s degree (requirements or electives).

The Shreve Study Abroad Scholarship was created in order to support and encourage global learning for IUPUI undergraduate students through participation in an approved study abroad program.
Eligibility Criteria
- IUPUI undergraduate student, full or part-time
- Indiana resident
- Participation in an approved study abroad program
- Minimum IU cumulative GPA of 2.75
- Financial need as determined by your FAFSA filing (Preference will be given to students with higher unmet need.)
- The credits earned on the program must count towards the student’s degree (requirements or electives).
- Have not previously received the Shreve Study Abroad Scholarship

Amount of Award: $3,000
The Study Abroad Planning Scholarship was created in order to support and encourage global learning for IUPUI, IUPUC, and IUFW undergraduate students through participation in an approved study abroad program. Applicants to the scholarships do not need to have already identified a program or know exactly what that they would like to do abroad. This is an opportunity to explore all international options.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate at IUPUI, IUPUC, or IUFW
- Must be within the first year at IUPUI, IUPUC, or IUFW (have completed no more than two Fall and/or Spring semesters)
- Financial need as determined by your FAFSA filing
- No previous international experience
- Special consideration will be given to first generation students

Additional Funding Opportunities
Award Amount: Up to $5,000
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness.
The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.
Program must be at least 3 weeks in length.
Applications will not be considered for a country with a travel advisory of 3 or 4.
The Gilman-McCain Scholarship is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and named after the late senator John S. McCain from Arizona.
It provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Developed under the framework of the State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the John McCain International Scholarship for the Children of Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is open to eligible students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid.

The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the US study abroad population. FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting minority, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs.
Eligibility Requirements
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the U.S. (graduate students are not eligible)
- Study abroad program must be eligible for credit at the student’s home institution
- Study abroad program must be at least 4 weeks (28 days) in country/countries
Preferences: FEA gives preference to students with demonstrated financial need, and strongly encourages students to apply who represent a group that is traditionally underrepresented in education abroad. These groups include, but are not limited to:
- First-generation college students
- Minority students
If you’re an undergraduate student who received a less-than-full-time Pell Grant during the academic year, you may be eligible for one in the summer.
To be considered for any type of summer financial aid, you must have filed your FAFSA and meet the eligibility requirements:
- You must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours
- You must be making satisfactory academic progress.
- As an IUPUI student registering for a course in Bloomington, you will need to be approved for a consortium.

You may be able to borrow a Federal Direct Loan or a Federal Parent PLUS Loan unless you’ve already borrowed the maximum allowed for the academic year.
To be considered for any type of summer financial aid, you must have filed your FAFSA and meet the eligibility requirements:

- You must be making satisfactory academic progress.

If you aren’t eligible for scholarships / federal aid or weren’t awarded as much funding as you actually need, you or your parents might consider taking out a private student loan through a bank, credit union, or other lender.
You should always consider federal student loans before private loans:
- Federal loans are usually much more affordable.
- Federal loans allow you to put off repaying them until after you graduate.
Before you apply for a private loan, complete your FAFSA to see if you qualify for a federal loan.
