Students should work with their O’Neill academic advisor to determine which semester will fit best for them to study at Sciences Po. Below are the general timeframes of Sciences Po’s academic calendar. Please use these time frames to help in planning your semester abroad:
Fall Semester: Late August - Mid December
Spring Semester: Mid January - Mid May
Sciences Po has a strong focus on the social sciences and humanities, but also offers courses in fields such as policy, law, and journalism. The majority of courses are offered in English and there are many offered in French as well. You do not need French language skills in order to do the Sciences Po exchange, however Sciences Po does require that exchange students take a French language course designated by a placement test. You will be in class with local French students as well as other international exchange students.
You can view course offerings from prior semesters as examples of coursework available at Sciences Po as an exchange student. Although course offerings are similar from year to year, all courses are subject to change:
Additionally, Sciences Po offers a unique certificate option for students. You have the option to take a certain selection of courses to earn a certificate in one of four categories:
There is no obligation to complete one of the certificate programs, it is merely an option. If it better suits your interests, please feel free to mix and match classes from the lists above.
You should prepare to take the equivalent of 15 IU credits during your semester at Sciences Po. Two European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are equal to one IU credit, requiring you to enroll in a minimum of 30 ECTS credits throughout the semester.
You must take 30 ECTS (15 IU credits) during your semester at Sciences Po.
If you drop below the required 30 ECTS enrollment while abroad, you will be awarded F grades for the missing credits (ex: if you register for 24 ECTS (12 IU credits), you will be give an F grade for the missing 3 IU credits) as per IU policy. Please maintain required enrollment!
You may apply if you:
- are an admitted O’Neill major or minor
- have completed your sophomore year of study
- have at least a 3.0 cumulative and O’Neill GPA; 3.3 GPA preferred
Sciences Po-Reims provides a variety of student housing options, all located off campus but still near enough to walk to class or downtown. Locations are from .5 to 2 miles from campus and depending on amenities, prices will vary.
Visit the Sciences Po-Reims housing website and click “Reims Campus” for more information.
Semester tuition will cost the same as if you were studying at IU – you will register and pay for 15 credits at your normal IU tuition rate (in-state or out-of-state) through your bursar account. No tuition will be paid to Sciences Po.
In addition to tuition, you will be responsible for covering your own overseas expenses including airfare, food, and housing. Roughly $1,200 dollars a month should cover food, housing, fun, study materials, and incidentals. Your biggest cost variable will be housing.
Merit-based and need-based scholarships are available for students participating in O'Neill exchanges.
O'Neill scholarship application deadlines are the same as the program application deadlines. For spring semester exchanges, the deadline is September 1. For fall semester exchanges, the deadline is February 1.
